Ryan rejoicing in his studio
Ryan Cureton is an artist from Union County, Monroe, North Carolina. Â Ryan has been drawing since holding his first pencil. As a young aspiring artist, Ryan enjoyed drawing cartoons and unique designs. As an 8th grader at Monroe Middle School, Ryan was chosen to design two logos for his school pep club and graduation program. As Ryan entered Monroe High School, he was able to take drafting classes which opened a whole new world of creativity! Drafting increased Ryan's abilities as a designer and later led him to employment as a window treatment designer.
Over the last 19 years, Ryan has worked as a designer and has even been featured in national and international publications. In 2000 when Ryan received an art kit as a Christmas gift, he began watercolor painting, then moving to acrylic and oils before discovering acrylic as his medium of choice.
Ryan is a mixed medium artist working with watercolor, Â acrylic, Â oil, wood, and fabric.
My mother was a master textile artist. My older siblings were good athletes. My cousin, Akewsi M Asante of NY, was a great influence; he would have oil paintings and different mediums in the house. That allowed me to see art firsthand and to be able to touch it.
Family influence gave me a sense of direction. I have a brother who signed to Def Jam records in 1992 as a music producer. My father was part of a music group and band, and my mother was a business owner with a professional custom drapery business. Just having those influences and the ability to see and appreciate nice things helped me to create. I learned by watching and looking, being a student of my own family.
